The Zeigarnik Effect: The Motivational Effect of Uncompleted Tasks on People
11/07/2023 10:28:06

The Zeigarnik effect is a phenomenon discovered by German psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik. Zeigarnik observed that when a task is incomplete or interrupted, people are more inclined to remember and complete that task.

The Zeigarnik effect shows that unfinished tasks create a kind of "open loop" in our minds, which motivates us. It has been found that while people are generally better at remembering uncompleted tasks, they are weaker in the process of remembering completed tasks.

This effect indicates that if a task is not completed, our brain continues to remember that task and feels the need to complete it. The Zeigarnik effect plays an important role, especially when the tasks that need to be done remain in the memory and constantly affect our thought processes.

The Zeigarnik effect is a principle also used in marketing, advertising and business. For example, leaving an unfinished story or question can engage people and generate more engagement. In addition, applications and games that use open loops also use the Zeigarnik effect, increasing user retention and interest.

This effect is remarkable in that it shows that people are motivated to work on unfinished tasks and that the brain keeps the need for completion in memory.
