The world's largest single crystal diamond is the Cullinan Diamond found in South Africa. This magnificent diamond has a weight of 3,106 carats (about 621 grams). The story of the Cullinan Diamond began in 1905 at the Premier Mine, owned by the Premier Diamond Mining Company (now Petra Diamonds), affiliated with Transvaal Prime Minister Louis Botha.

When the Cullinan Diamond was found on January 25, 1905, its size and clarity caused a great stir around the world. This extraordinary diamond was recognized as an example of sheer exclusivity and rarity. It was named in honor of the mine's owner, Thomas Cullinan.

At the time of its discovery, the Cullinan Diamond was recorded as the largest diamond ever mined. However, cutting the diamond was a challenging process because it involved unique challenges and risks for craftsmen. The diamond had to be cut in the best possible way, preserving its natural beauty.

Eventually, the Cullinan Diamond was shipped to the Asscher Brothers diamond cutting factory in Amsterdam, England. The cutting of this particular diamond required a level of perfection and mastery unprecedented in history. The process of cutting and polishing the diamond took 8 months.

The masters of the Asscher Brothers performed the primary and secondary cuts of the Cullinan Diamond. First, the diamond was cut into a large heart shape, also known as the "I. Star of Africa". This cut formed the largest piece of the diamond, resulting in a 530.2-carat (about 106 grams) stone. I. Star of Africa, today Queen of England II. It is in Elizabeth's crown.

The secondary cut turned into a stone of 317.4 carats (about 63 grams). This diamond was called the "Star of Africa II" or "Cullinan II" and has also become an essential part of British crown jewels.

Smaller stones from other segments of the Cullinan Diamond were also used in famous jewelry and collections. In total, 105 key diamonds were mined from the Cullinan Diamond.
