The Origin and Arrival of Gold: A Journey from the Supernova to the Planets

Gold is formed as a result of nucleosynthesis, a process in which heavy elements are formed during supernova explosions. Massive stars end in a supernova, a violent explosion at the end of their lives. During this explosion, high temperature and pressure occur in the core of the star.
In a supernova explosion, heavy elements, such as gold, are formed by the fusion of atomic nuclei. The gold formed is spread out into space by the effect of the explosion. Later, these gold-containing gases and dusts come together under the influence of gravity to form structures called molecular clouds.
Molecular clouds are regions where new stars and planets form. Stars and planets are formed by the collapse and condensation of these clouds of gas and dust. Gas and dust containing gold also falls into the cores of planets and asteroids in the process.
During the formation of the Earth, about 4.6 billion years ago, these gold-containing materials were incorporated into the Earth's structure. Then, an asteroid bombardment that took place about 200 million years ago caused millions of tons of gold to fall to the Earth's surface.
Most of the world's gold reserves today are a remnant of this asteroid bombardment. Because gold is a naturally occurring element, it is found in limited quantities on earth and becomes valuable and remarkable for people.
