Mid-Atlantic Ridge: The World's Tallest Mountain Range and the Mysterious Ascent of the Atlantic Ocean
03/07/2023 11:21:38
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a ridge system that stretches in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and is considered the longest mountain range in the world. This ridge is approximately 16,000 kilometers long and 1,000 kilometers wide. The ridge is a mid-ocean ridge formed at the point of divergence of the North American and Eurasian plates.
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge was formed as a result of volcanic activities and tectonic plate movements in time periods on the geological time scale. During the separation of the plates, hot magma forms new crust as the oceanic crust rises upward and cools. This process results in the uplift and widening of the mountain range.
The interesting thing is that the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is located on the seafloor. This makes it a phenomenon that humans cannot observe directly and is little known to most. Also, this ridge system is home to a wealth of marine life lurking in the depths of the ocean and is a research site for scientists to explore.
