Klepsidra: The Mysterious Water Clock Used for Agricultural Planning in Ancient Egypt

In ancient Egypt, a special water clock was used to regularly and efficiently control the floods of the Nile. This water clock was called "Klepsidra" and was used by the Egyptians to plan their farming and irrigation activities.

Klepsidra was based on the principle that water slowly flowed through a hole in a stone or ceramic vessel. According to Egypt's agricultural calendar and irrigation programs, monitoring the filling and discharge of water over a given period of time was important for timing agricultural work.

This primitive water clock was used to determine the time based on the flow rate of the water, without using a fixed unit of measurement like the sun's position or the hourglass. In this way, when the water level began to drop before the floods of the Nile River, preparations could be made for agricultural activities and agricultural lands could be irrigated.
