Enuma Elish, also known as the "Epic of Creation," is an ancient Babylonian creation myth. It is considered one of the oldest recorded creation stories, dating back to the 18th century BCE. The myth was written on seven clay tablets in Akkadian, the language of ancient Babylon.
The Enuma Elish describes the creation of the world and the rise of the Babylonian gods. The story revolves around a conflict between the gods of Babylon and a monstrous deity named Tiamat, who represents the primordial chaos. Tiamat seeks revenge on the younger generation of gods for disturbing her peace, and she gathers an army of monstrous creatures to aid her in battle.
The chief god of Babylon, Marduk, emerges as the champion of the gods. He offers to defeat Tiamat and her forces in exchange for being proclaimed the supreme god of the Babylonian pantheon. The other gods agree, and Marduk equips himself with weapons and goes to face Tiamat in combat. He defeats her, splits her body in half, and creates the heavens and the earth from her remains.
Marduk then establishes his reign as the head of the gods and sets up the orderly structure of the universe. He assigns roles to the gods and creates humanity to serve and worship the gods. The Enuma Elish concludes with a hymn praising Marduk for his victory and his role as the creator of the world.
The Enuma Elish reflects the cosmological beliefs and religious practices of ancient Babylon. It emphasizes the triumph of order over chaos and the establishment of the divine hierarchy in the universe. The myth also showcases the important role of Marduk as the protector and leader of Babylon, reflecting the prominence of this city in ancient Mesopotamia.
