Bystander Effect-Unwillingness to Help in Crowded Environments
09/07/2023 00:41:42
Sociology and psychology research has revealed a phenomenon known as the "Bystander Effect". The Bystander Effect explains that a person is less likely to help in an emergency if others are around.
This effect first emerged in 1964 as a result of research on the murder of a woman named Catherine Genovese in New York. When Genovese was attacked by the attacker, although about 38 people had heard or seen the incident, no one rushed to help. The Bystander Effect shows that people tend to delegate responsibility to others in a crowded environment.
The reason for this situation is a process called "diffusion responsibility". In a crowded environment, individuals reduce their own responsibilities by thinking that other people will also intervene in the event. At the same time, most people are uncertain about what to do in an emergency and tend to observe the reaction of others.
The Bystander Effect is an interesting example of how human behavior is affected by social interaction and group dynamics. In order to overcome this effect, measures such as awareness campaigns that encourage helping behavior in society and direct response trainings in emergencies are taken.
